According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, in the first half of 2026, the United States exported approximately 1.25 million tons of aluminum-containing scrap, with a year-on-year growth of 21%. The previous year's export volume was 1.03 million tons. The top five export destinations were: Thailand (268,000 tons, an increase of 8%); India (233,350 tons, an increase of 28%); Malaysia (160,700 tons, an increase of 10%); South Korea (139,500 tons, an increase of 38%); and Hong Kong, China (136,200 tons, an increase of 51%).
It is worth noting that in mid-August, the Aluminum Association of the United States had called on its website to "stop exporting: consider the U.S. scrap aluminum as a strategic asset". Additionally, earlier this year, the SOCA Alliance (which includes U.S. recycled aluminum producers) had conducted lobbying activities aimed at addressing the shortage of aluminum supply in the United States. They believed that "the export of scrap aluminum from the United States is one of the reasons for this problem".
