Norsk Hydro says Qatar Energy has announced the suspension of aluminum production

March 4, 2026
On Tuesday, March 3rd, Norsk Hydro stated that Qatar Energy had issued a statement halting the production of some of its downstream products in Qatar, including urea, polymers, methanol and aluminium.

Previously on Monday, due to an Iranian drone attack on Qatar's huge Ras Laffan energy facility, the company had announced the suspension of liquefied natural gas production.

Hydro stated that Qatar Energy supplies natural gas to Qatalum, a joint venture between Hydro of Norway and QAMCO (Qatar Aluminium Manufacturing Company) with each holding a 50% stake. The annual production capacity of primary aluminum is 648,000 tons and the casting capacity is 687,000 tons.

The Norwegian group stated in its announcement: "It is currently unclear what the specific impact of the Qatalum incident will be on aluminium production. Hydro is seeking to obtain more information."

Hydro stated that in 2025, based on a 50% shareholding ratio, Qatar Aluminum achieved an adjusted net profit of 1.3 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately 134.32 million US dollars).
