Japanese some aluminum buyers have reached an agreement with global producers regarding the aluminum premium for the fourth quarter. The premium for shipment from October to December is $255 per ton, a 35% decrease compared to the third quarter.
Sources involved in the negotiations disclosed that other Japanese buyers are still in talks with producers.
The significant drop in the premium for the fourth quarter indicates that Japanese buyers have enhanced their bargaining power in the current market environment. It also reflects the producers' and consumers' re-evaluation of regional supply and demand and spot costs.
As the main aluminum consumption and import market in Asia, Japan's quarterly premium not only affects the actual purchasing costs of local buyers but also serves as an important reference for pricing in other Asian markets.
With the premium dropping to $255 per ton, it means that Japanese importers' premium above the benchmark LME price has significantly decreased, helping to alleviate the pressure on aluminum import costs.
However, only some buyers have reached the agreement so far, and other negotiations are still ongoing. Therefore, the final quarterly benchmark premium may still change.
