Volta Aluminium's New Continuous Casting and Rolling Unit Reduces Ghana's Dependence on Imported Aluminium Rods for Cables

According to foreign media reports, Volta Aluminium (VALCO)'s newly built continuous casting and rolling unit is expected to reduce the reliance of Ghana's domestic cable manufacturers on imported aluminium rods for cables.
VALCO's Chief Financial Officer, Sepenu Agbetsise, said that the new product line has provided industrial test samples to two local downstream manufacturers, Nexans Kablemetal and Reroy Cables, and received satisfactory feedback, marking the company's shift from traditional primary aluminium production to the processing of higher value-added products.
"Previously, these companies (cable manufacturers) had to import aluminium rods to process into various cables that power our homes. Now, VALCO can supply directly to them," said Sepenu.
It is reported that Ghana's aluminium industry still heavily relies on imported raw materials. Although the country has aluminium ore resources and an operating smelter, due to the lack of a domestic alumina refinery in Ghana, VALCO still needs to import alumina for production.
