Ahmad al-Alshaikh, the executive vice president of aluminum business at Maaden, a Saudi mining company, said that the current annual aluminum demand in Saudi Arabia is approximately 1 million tons. It is expected to rise to 1.6 to 1.8 million tons by 2030 and is likely to double in the next five to seven years. This growth is mainly driven by large-scale infrastructure construction, international exhibitions, and sports event-related projects.
Alshaikh stated during the Fastmarkets International Aluminum Conference held in Budapest that hosting large international exhibitions and the 2034 football World Cup in Saudi Arabia will significantly increase the demand for aluminum.
According to current plans, Saudi Arabia will build 15 new stadiums for the World Cup, and the construction of supporting airports, hotels, transportation facilities, and urban construction projects may also continue. With the gradual implementation of "Vision 2030" related investments, the demand for aluminum in the construction, transportation, manufacturing, and other infrastructure sectors is expected to grow simultaneously.
Maaden is an important producer of aluminum in Saudi Arabia, currently producing approximately 780,000 tons of primary aluminum and about 1 million tons of cast metal. Approximately 85% of its products are sold in the domestic market of Saudi Arabia.
The continuous advancement of large-scale projects in Saudi Arabia implies that the aluminum consumption in the Middle East region may maintain a strong growth in the next few years and may further increase the demand for primary aluminum and aluminum products in the regional market.
Regarding the recent situation in the Middle East, Alshaikh stated that the impact of the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on Maaden is currently limited. He pointed out that the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council have taken coordinated measures to mitigate the impact of regional conflicts on the economy and supply chains. Therefore, although there is considerable uncertainty in the energy and logistics environment in the region, Maaden's current aluminum business has not been severely affected.
